TATE MODERN

London

The architects Herzog & de Meuron supervised the renovation of an old power plant located on the banks of the Thames. This important redevelopment project gave rise to the Tate Modern art gallery, which has now become one of the most visited museums of all time.

The restoration by the Swiss architectural firm focused on maintaining the building’s characteristic industrial structure, still visible in the external facades and the subdivision of the interior. The museum complex, for example, has preserved the former turbine hall, now transformed into a scenographic entrance hall which accompanies guests towards the various exhibitions.

In addition to the galleries, there are shops, a cafeteria, an auditorium, reading areas and a restaurant overlooking the river. These multipurpose environments provide the ideal location for Jasper Morrison’s signature Tate stools and chairs and Elan sofas.

More than a gallery, Tate Modern has become a crucial landmark for modern and contemporary art.
